Stuff the LC and #KindnessCounts

At Georges Vanier, the Learning Commons is a shared space that is used by staff and students for lots of great activities. We are helping further a sense of ownership by inviting students to bring a plush toy to hang out on the shelves in the LC for a couple of weeks. Please label stuffies with your child’s name and division.  No sentimental favourites, just in case…

Making Patterns, Settings and Butterflies

IMG_8394So much building and making and problem solving this week in the Learning Commons.

Students in Kindergarten used shapes to show their learning about setting. Some Grade 1 students showed learning about shapes and symmetry using Hello Crayon and their knowledge of butterflies.

And some intermediate students problem solved how to get the whole class to organize pinecones and coloured paper into one unified pattern. We also photographed our stuffed toys and turned them into readers. Continue reading

Storytelling, Deconstruction, Photography.

Primary students so enjoyed listening to Mo Willems’ Elephant and Piggie story that they asked for me to read it again. Instead I asked them to tell it to me as I turned the pages. I secretly recorded their story. So much fun!

We have been figuring out how best to open up a CD player and check out all the parts. We hope to arrange the pieces in the shape of a knight’s armour.

Our ‘Stuff the Learning Commons’ is in full swing. Some primary students have been using the stuffies to practice using the camera, framing a photo and uploading to DropBox.

We are also changing the way the books are sorted in the Learning Commons. The switch to grouping the intermediate fiction by genre has been a total success. Now we are simplifying the spine labels to make it even easier for students to find the books they love!

Minecraft, Making Armour, Stamp Club, AppSmash

This week we began to explore ways to use Minecraft to show learning. Some Grade 6/7 students incorporated what they know about castles into worlds that primary classes can investigate. Some primary students are also creating worlds based on the settings of Fairy Tales.

‘Right Tighty, Lefty Loosey’ Students are de-constructing old headphones. We plan to build a suit of armour for our skeleton display. Stay tuned for updates.

We are Stuffed…and the Pirates are Coming!

We are stuffed with stuffies in the Learning Commons! Students have been claiming ownership of the space by bringing in Plush Toys to decorate. We will leave them on display all next week.

May 15th is Dress Like a Pirate Day at Vanier School. A striped shirt, a pair of boots, a big belt and a scarf and you too can be a pirate! The whole school pirate crew will be buddy reading in the gym.

The Natural Disasters club have begun to get creative with their Tsunami learning. Each student in Division 7, 8 and 9 will be creating an iMovie trailer to gather together all of their blogs, tweets, and art to demonstrate their learning.

Grade 2’s have been using My Story app to make animal eBooks and autobiographical About Me books. Grade 1’s have been learning to use Pic Collage to show their learning about plants and demonstrating an understanding of Beginning Middle and End of a story. Kindergarten has been practising using Drop Box to save their work and Grade 3 have been utilizing the district eLibrary.Yahoo!

Some Grade 3s used Explain Everything App to show our learning about Mo Willem’s book ‘Knuffle Bunny Free’. Here’s a sample:

Some Grade ones tried using Pic Collage App to show their beginning explorations of the parts of a plant and how to make a labelled diagram.

On Friday the Learning Commons was filled with learners! Ms. Dhaliwal’s 5/6 class used Grafio App and designed and blogged promotional posters for their Power Play projects. Meanwhile the Grade 1s used 5 different types of manipulatives to figure out which was the best for building a structure. There were pros and cons for each but the foam squares won out.
