To celebrate Valentine’s Day we created Love Tokens on the 3D Printer and learned how to braid yarn. Click here for the stl file. A single print run for nine hearts was only a few minutes. I taped the wool strands to the desks ahead of time. We took a look at part of this video that shows the braiding clearly. Students did a great job and enjoyed the challenge.
Other classes continued to celebrate learning at Vanier using QR Codes and our Mighty Girl Projects are starting to take shape. And, we made a quick video of our wall of What Do You Love?
This week in the Learning Commons, students showed their ideas about the Surrey Schools Picture Book of the Year nominations. They used Chalkboard and Hello Crayon Apps. Students in Kindergarten to Grade 2 practised exporting their creations to the camera roll and uploading to DropBox. Brilliant!

Many primary classes have been reading the nominations for the Surrey School’s Picture Book of the Year. We hope to finish up the stories and complete our voting within the next two weeks. Check out all of the titles here on Teacher Librarian Emiline Downs’ webpage.
Our “What Do You Love?” wall has filled up just in time for Valentine’s Day. Students and staff at Georges Vanier love lots of different things. I was so happy to see “I Love Reading”, “I Love KIndnessCounts”, and “I Love Learning”. We also love lots of sports, games, candy and most importantly, our families and the people who take care of us.
Students also blogged their castle creations. Nicely done!
This week in the Learning Commons we have been showing what we have learned about castle design and structure. Students included features such as a keep, arrow slits, crenellations, a gatehouse and a well in their creations. Next we will be looking at designing castles in more detail to include features of medieval life. Check out this great video showing their work.

The #KindnessCounts trophy in the LC has been a great success. Each class now has their own ‘designer’ trophy or rosette to help continue thinking about kindness in the classroom.
We participated in Global School Play Day on Feb 4th. Students created, shared, problem solved, imagined, laughed, deciphered, communicated, were kind and cleaned up together. Read more about it here
Our ‘What Do You Love?’ wall is beginning to take shape. Students are asked to contribute by thinking about, ‘What makes your heart sing?’, ‘What brings you joy?’ The answers are wonderful. Come on by the LC for a marker and help celebrate the things and people we love.
What Do You Love? Come on by the Learning Commons and add to our banner. So far we love the beach, basketball, reading, our families, BFFs and much more. See Ms. Crosland for a marker and help us to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Stay up to date with student learning by following @VanierLC on twitter. Division 5 and 9 learned about the art of Ted Harrison and used the Pro-Create App to make their own digital creations in the style of the famous Canadian artist. Check out their work on the student blogs.
Strong Start Pre-school celebrated Chinese New Year in the Learning Commons with a 3D horse colouring activity, horse pictures and videos. Grade One and Two students are learning how to use screenshots, photo editing, the camera and dropbox to save and share their work. Check out their 45 second video.

What Do You Love? To help celebrate Valentine’s Day, our school community has been writing on the Learning Commons wall! Parents and school visitors are invited to share their ideas and what they love on our display. Markers available in the Learning Commons.
